Wii Hackintosh Update

I just wanted to report that my little gaming experiment – turning my Mac into a Nintendo Wii with Dolphin Emulator – is a smashing success. In a previous post, I got Dolphin Emulator up and running with a PS3 controller. Dolphin is an awesome piece of software that runs Wii and Gamecube games on your computer (Windows, Mac OS or Linux). I recently got a Wii controller with nunchuck and a wireless sensor bar, and the whole setup works flawlessly. And it does what no Wii can ever do: it runs in 1080p!

4 Things I Liked About the PS4 Announcement

Finally, we know something about the PS4. A lot of it looks awesome. Some of it looks meh. And still more of it is shrouded in mystery. Sony didn't even show us what it will look like! What's up with that?

Ni No Kuni Mini-Review

You had me at hello, Ni No Kuni. You had me at hello. How could I possibly resist you? I love Japanese RPG's. I love Studio Ghibli. And you're both: a Japanese RPG with animation and character design by Studio Ghibli. So I bought the game on the day that it came out in stores, and yes, it cost me a little more, but I have not been disappointed.

Rappler for iOS

I'm becoming more and more impressed with Rappler, the news site spearheaded by Maria Ressa. Rappler is doing a solid job on how news should be presented in the post-newspaper era. And now they have an iOS app.

PS4 incoming! What we know so far...

Sony's announcing something big this February 20. It's confirmed to be about PlayStation, so the rumor mill has been churning. By now, it's almost sure that the announcement will be about the PS4, or whatever the name of Sony's next console will be. Here's what we know so far, based on leaks and rumors:

My GTX 660 Ti video card is here!

My birthday is coming up, so I got myself this to celebrate: it's an Nvidia GeForce 660 Ti video card, the gaming muscle in my hackintosh gaming machine. So far, it's been pretty sweet. I have no reason to complain about its performance. And one day I will overclock, but for now I'm just happy to have a reasonably powerful video card. Mini review after the jump!

Why Microsoft's Surface Pro is important

I'll go out on a limb here. I think the Surface Pro is something special. While Apple has been busy printing money, Microsoft put their shoulder to the wheel and made a tablet that you can use for work. Not a tablet for consuming silly games, taking Instagram photos, doing Facebook, and reading the news. A serious tablet for work. That's a crucial difference. The Surface Pro isn't perfect, but it sounds like the device that everyone was clamoring for when this tablet thing all began: a MacBook Pro Touch. I don't know if anyone out there still wants one of those, but I sure do.

My new gig

I'm happy to announce that I'm now a movie columnist for the website KRISTN.com. The title of the column is The Movie Nerd and this is where I talk about one of the great loves of my life: movies. KRISTN is "your digital go-to girl," so I guess that makes me "your go-to-male-BFF-movie-buddy?" Haha.

Play Wii games on your Mac with Dolphin Emulator

Wii games on your Mac or PC? What witchcraft is this? Yes, it's possible. And yes, you don't need much. Thanks to the magic of Dolphin Emulator, you can run Wii games and Gamecube games. So far, my experience of it has been pretty good. It runs the games smoothly at 60fps and you can even run the games at 1080p if you want to – something the Wii and Gamecube were not capable of doing. (It looks the same, just with more pixels.)
