All-TIME 100 Gadgets

Wow, what a lousy list. I know TIME's readers are considerably older/more business-oriented/more American than the national average here in the Philippines, but their Top 100 Gadgets list is really missing a lot. For starters, 100+ million people are wondering where the PS2 is. And there's no mention of Nintendo's Wii, DS or SNES. Not to forget the contribution of Nokia's el cheapo phones like the 5110 to the proliferation of mobile technology all over the world. I don't know about you, but I think TIME has got some explaining to do.

Hi. Sorry this comment is not related to your post but I couldn't find a send message button on your blog. Anyway, I was just wondering if your iPad is still running on iOS3.2. If you've already upgraded, can you teach me how please? I am so annoyed that my sister who has jailbroken iPad from Greenhills has better features on her gadget than mine, bought from an Apple store. I've checked the Apple website but it just says the update is "coming soon." Well how soon is it. How come other iPad users already have an upgraded firmware? Argh! Anyway, just wanted to know your thoughts on this. I know you also bought your iPad from Apple so I'm assuming you're experiencing the same things I do with my iPad. Thanks. Will wait for your reply or post, whichever works for you :-)

Hi Cathie. iOS 4.2 for the iPad was meant to come out this Friday (US time), which means sometime tomorrow. But there have been reports of delays: http://www.macstories.net/news/ios-4-2-delayed-due-to-ipad-wifi-issues-new-gm-build-coming/. At any rate, we should be able to expect it this November, which was the timeline that Apple committed to. So, yes, it's coming soon!

As for iPad users already on iOS 4.2, they're probably running jailbreak, unless they're devs with access to the early release. I'm sticking to official releases though, for complicated reasons. More info, including a download link to iOS 4.2 GM for developers, and a How To here: http://www.coveringweb.com/2010/11/jailbreak-ios-42-gm-on-iphone-4-ipod.html

Thanks for your reply! I did find a website outlining the steps for jailbreaking your iPad but I'm too scared to do it. :-) I guess I will just wait for the official release of the update. It's annoying but better safe than sorry. Thanks again!
