So that's how the Dyson Air Multiplier works...

I've been drooling over this amazing "electric fan" by Dyson. If it's your first time to see it, the Air Multiplier is a fan without blades -- and without the buffeting effect that comes with fans with blades. Amazing stuff. And it looks bloody gorgeous. I've always thought that electric fans are the ugliest appliances in any home.

I've also been wondering how the crazy thing works. It looks like voodoo magic. Happily, I stumbled upon this post by Engadget. Click on the video to see how it works.

In a nutshell, a tiny jet engine sucks in air at the base and sends it out through cracks in the circular enclosure. The moving air then amplifies the surrounding air. It's freakishly clever!

And hideously overpriced, par for the course at Dyson.
