Magazines on the iPhone Part 2: Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2010

Ok, I'm a little late to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue party. The yearly issue and the app have both been out for a while now. The thing is, this formerly "must-purchase" issue has become less and less of a must-purchase issue as the years have progressed. The last SI I bought had Beyonce on the cover when the world was young… They say the era of the supermodel has passed, but SI is soldiering on in the era of the iPhone...

With the iPhone SI Swimsuit, you get either a free version with one pic of each model, or a $1.99 version (via in-app upgrade) with five pics of each model and a whole bunch of streaming videos. Mercifully, the articles are nowhere to be found. Who needs articles in SI Swimsuit?

The videos are mostly short one-minute clips, more of a tease than anything else. You can't save these videos, but at the very least you can mark your favorites. Meanwhile, you can choose to download the photos to your iPhone's photo album, but the resolution is a paltry 320 x 480.

Of course, SI Swimsuit is all about the models and here, it delivers. The big names of yesteryear are replaced by Bar Rafaeli, Anne V, Irina Shayk, and Brooklyn Decker -- phenomenal models. The photography is gorgeous, and the additional content is worth the two dollars IF you dig itty bitty and oftentimes choppy streaming video (depending on your connection). If you're looking for still photos -- and the photos are amazing stuff really -- you might feel a little cheated. You'll be better off buying the print version of the magazine or getting -- you guessed it -- an iPad.
